Wednesday, May 29. 2013Chakra-2013.05-Benz ISO released The Chakra Project team is very happy to announce the third release of Chakra Benz. “Benz” is the name of a series of Chakra releases that follow the KDE Software Compilation 4.10 series.
This new release includes some existing new features:
Bundles are no longer available in this new Chakra release. They have been replaced by actual packages, installed to a path of their own: /extra. The Extra repository, which provides this group of must-have, GTK-based applications and dependencies, is disabled by default. To enable it, edit /etc/pacman.conf as an administrator (root) and uncomment the related lines. For more information, see Managing Repositories in the documentation. In addition, by popular community demand, we now also offer the ISO file through an official torrent. You will find the link for it in the Get page. Have in mind that during the ISO testing period there were some locale problems reported that we could not find the cause of. If you experience something similar please have a look in the mailing list discussion and report your issues. And as always, this new release includes new versions of your favorite software:
To create reliable installation media, please follow the instructions in the wiki. Chakra ISO images do not support unetbootin, and DVD images need a burn speed no higher than 4×. Monday, April 22. 2013pacman 4.1 moved to stableAfter a long testing cycle, pacman alongside it's dependencies got moved to the stable repository. Allan posted some interesting info you may read about pacman 4.1: http://allanmcrae.com/2013/04/pacman-4-1-released We advice to use the terminal for this update and wait until your mirror get synced. Friday, April 5. 2013KDE SC 4.10.2 moved to stable repositories.![]() KDE SC 4.10.2 is now officially available for all Chakra users. The over 100 recorded bugfixes in this release include improvements to the Personal Information Management suite Kontact, the Window Manager KWin, and others. KDE's Development Platform has received a number of updates that affect multiple applications. The complete changes are listed on KDE's issue tracker. As always, make sure your mirror is fully synced before performing this update. To check, run in a konsole: mirror-check Sunday, March 17. 2013RIP Fritz_Van_Tom A very sad email reached many of the Chakra devs today. One of our own, one we all wondered where he was since last fall, had passed away last September. Excerpt from the mail: Hi Chakra developers, the reason for my writing is a very sad one. Last September Johannes Tröscher, a friend of mine, died in a tragic accident. He was an open source enthusiast and often told me that he is working on some projects. I finally got the guts to do some research about his work and it turns out he worked on the Chakra project. Johannes Tröscher, Fritz_Van_Tom as he was known in Chakra and KDE, was a very active contributor to Chakra and many KDE projects. What you see today for the Welcome Plasmoid, the bundle manager, all the work done in Tribe QML, all that (and much more) came from Johannes Tröscher. He was quite active coding for KDE too, most will probably know of his contributions to Rekonq. The ISOs following the KDE 4.11 series will be dedicated to him, and will carry the name "Fritz". On behalf of the whole Chakra-Project team, our deepest condolences to his friends and family, may you find all the needed strength to deal with this loss. Saturday, March 9. 2013Chakra-2013.03-Benz ISO released With this second release of "Benz"(a code name that will follow the KDE SC 4.10 series), the Chakra-Project team is very happy to announce a new feature that has been on the wishlist for quite some time. Tribe (the installer) has a netinstaller feature implemented, giving the user the option for a regular offline install, or install fully updated packages, starting with a minimal functional KDE desktop, and adding groups of packages to that minimal install as desired.KDE SC is updated to 4.10.1. The over 100 recorded bugfixes since 4.10.0 include improvements to the Personal Information Management suite Kontact, the Window Manager KWin, and others. KDE's Development Platform has received a number of updates that affect multiple applications For our other tools Kapudan has launchers added and improved systemd units activation handling. GFXboot has improved keyboard options and for the artwork, the "Dharma Grub" theme is updated. As for the repositories, there were a large amount of updates to base packages, including Glib2 2.34.3, Networkmanager 0.9.8.0, Iw 3.8, Libffi 3.0.12, Libnl 3.2.21, Db 5.3.21, Apr 1.4.6, with updates to all that depend on these. Calligra 2.6.1, LibreOffice to 4.0.1, Chromium 25.0.1364.160, Firefox 19.0.2 are among the many applications and bundles updated to their latest version. The much anticipated Steam has been added to the games repositories. With our first "Benz" ISO release, we mentioned three major features missing. With the netinstaller in place, we are down to two, most obvious is no GUI for package management and Tribe's partition page is missing the Solid integration, needed to have automated partitioning and support for LVM, RAID, LUKS and the likes, which we know are needed for a complete, modern installer. To create reliable installation media, please follow the instructions in the wiki. Chakra's ISO's do not support unetbootin, and DVDs need a burn speed no higher than 4x. Monday, February 18. 2013Tribe Netinstall testing ISO released As mentioned in the notes for the first Benz release, one of the three major things missing is minimal/netinstall. Work was underway at that time for an option to have netinstall in Tribe, but such a drastic change needs as much testing as possible. Since that first Benz ISO already had plenty of changes, we decided to delay the release of the netinstall option, until it had a change to be very thoroughly tested. With this announcement we'd like to ask the community to help with this testing, so when it will be included in a future stable ISO, it is fully ready. Please understand, there has been quite a bit of internal testing done on this new feature, but we do expect a lot more bugs to be found, so do not test on a production system, but follow the guidelines explained in the Test-Squad Wiki. You can use the latest Benz-2013.02 ISO, if you already downloaded that version. All needed is to install the latest Tribe in live mode: sudo pacman -U http://chakra-project.org/repo/testing/x86_64/tribe-2013.02.17-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz Or you can use the minimal "Benz-2013.02.18" test ISO for this purpose. ![]() Start Tribe as usual and make sure you are connected to the internet, you'll notice the change after the partition page. There the new install type selection page is added, and select "Netinstall", add as many package groups as you like. Friday, February 15. 2013Wanna play? Steam lands in Chakra!Sunday, February 10. 2013Chakra-2013.02-Benz ISO released It is 3 years this week the late Chakra-Project founder Jan Mette, called a team meeting to discuss his plans to have Chakra continue as an independent distribution. With this first release of "Benz" (a code name that will follow the KDE SC 4.10 series), it would have been so nice to know if he'd agreed with how the Chakra-Project team executed his dream. With the code name "Benz" we are back to using names of famous engineers, with this one, we'd like to honor the German roots of Chakra by using one of the top German engineers.KDE SC 4.10 is about the most polished release KDE has put out to date, for all the highlights visit 4.10 announcement . One feature that stands out is the fast improvements of nepomuk, please read all about Nepomuk cleaner. Our tools have gotten a lot of attention too, the live ISO has switched to using GFXboot , this will give many more options for language and keyboard settings, adds quite a few hardware checking tools in a visual pleasing way.Tribe has now a dedicated keyboard page, this will avoid issues in setting the desired keyboard correctly. Marble is better integrated, locale selection improved. The Chakra artwork theme "Dharma" is fully updated, and integration is set for all parts of the live ISO, grub bootloader, KDM and the installed desktop. ![]() As for the repositories, most noteworthy updates are Linux 3.7.6, the first kernel that fixes the Samsung laptop issues. Nvidia and Catalyst are at their latest version, so are the free graphics drivers. Qtwebkit is updated to 2.3, which brings full WebGl support back, adds Caret browsing, support for spellchecking and animated scrolling in Qt browsers. Mariadb has replaced MySql. Boost 1.52.0, Icu 50.1.2, Mesa 9.0.2, Poppler 0.22.0, Openjpeg 1.5.1, PyQt 4.9.6, Networkmanager 0.9.6.4, Virtuoso 6.1.6, Phonon-backend-gstreamer 4.6.3, Calligra 2.6.0, LibreOffice 3.6.5, are among the many updated to their latest version. As always, the bundles are fully updated, this includes for example Firefox 18.0.2, Chromium 24.0.1312.68, GIMP 2.8.4 and Inkscape 0.48.4. The Chakra-Project team is fully aware a distribution is far more judged by what is not accomplished yet, than by what is. Though many of the things we set out to get done 3 years ago are implemented, there still are three major features missing. Most obvious is no GUI for package management. Our own package manager, Akabei, is in Alpha 2, not ready to be used. Tribe's partition page is missing the Solid integration one of our devs worked on during the last GSoC, to have automated partitioning and support for LVM, RAID, LUKS and the likes, which we know are needed for a complete, modern installer. Plus the option to choose a minimal/netinstall is needed. To create reliable installation media, please follow the instructions in the wiki. Chakra's ISO's do not support unetbootin, and DVDs need a burn speed no higher than 4x. Links: Download: Images at SourceForge Chakra Beginners Guide Thursday, February 7. 2013KDE SC 4.10, plus a total of over 1000 packages moved to stable repositories After 3 months of testing, 6 full KDE SC (beta's, RC's) builds, well over 3000 packages compiled just for the 4.10 test cycle, we are very pleased to present KDE SC 4.10 to our stable repo's. Please read all about what this new version brings in the official announcement. But this has been a long test cycle, with many things updated for 4.10, others updated to prepare for the first Benz release, so in all, this is the biggest move from testing to stable to date. You'll receive a Boost and Icu update, which alone triggered a rebuild of over 100 packages, including most games. LibreOffice, Calligra, Digikam, XBMC, QtWebkit, QtCreator, Qt5 updates are also coming to stable. Mariadb replaces MySql. There are quite a few replaces with the KDE games being packaged differently, printer plasmoid changes, gtk-integration taken over by KDE (no longer a Chakra developed app), so make sure to answer "yes" to all replaces questions, and make sure your mirror is synced before trying to update. Run "mirror-check" first. Thursday, January 31. 2013Switching from MySQL to MariaDB The Chakra Project decided to switch Chakra's default SQL engine to MariaDB. The upcoming KDE SC 4.10 will be built against it. MariaDB is an enhanced, drop-in replacement for MySQL and is available under the terms of the GPL v2 license. It's developed by the MariaDB community with the MariaDB Foundation as its main steward. For more information about MariaDB, it's features and the community you can have a look here: https://mariadb.org/en/about/ Monday, January 28. 2013Systemd-197 and persistent network naming scheme Systemd 197 is ready to move to stable, a clear explanation is added in the .install what is changing with this update.More info about why the decision to update systemd as chosen, plus a link to an upstream wiki: chakra-devel mailing list, discussing systemd-197 Your next pacman -Syu will stop with a pacman and pacman-helpme update, explaining the need to use: sudo pacman -S systemd --force Followed by: sudo pacman -Syu To get all the way in line with upstream, in Systemd 196 getty@.service build inclusion was changed, so the symlink was owned by systemd, but that created a file conflict. It was masked in that update, this update it is no longer masked. Make sure your mirror is fully synced before performing this update: mirror-check
