Though no new KDE this time for a new ISO, lots of other changes make this a very interesting new ISO in the Chakra development plan.


A switch to systemd is in the near future for Chakra, and to prepare for that, lots of files were moved, many, many core packages updated, a big move from /lib to /usr/lib set in motion.

The Chakra Development Team is proud to announce the final Archimedes release, this codename has followed the KDE SC 4.8 series.


As with the previous release, Chakra is no longer shipping a GUI for package management. Appset-qt was the GUI for pacman, but was not handling complex updates as should, so it is dropped from this ISO. In the initial phase of using a built from scratch package manager, there will be no GUI for package management either, so this is a good time to let any user get accustomed to this situation. Pacman is the cli frontend for package management, the online package viewer is there for additional info and searches.

With this release a big move to /usr/lib has occurred to prepare Chakra for a complete move to systemd, kernel is updated to linux-3.4.3, udev to 182, new initscripts used, kmod is at 0.8, mkinitcpio at 0.8.8, to name a few of the newer base packages included. These base updates made the third Archimedes release no longer usable for simple updates, thus a new ISO needed, to avoid that new users are right away confronted with a need to force an update and choose between a lot of replaces. To prepare for the upcoming update to xorg 1.12, the nvidia-96xx legacy driver is dropped from this ISO, and no longer available in the Chakra repo's.


Chakra is offering a DVD version only with this release. It includes all the language packs, many of standard KDE apps, the all new calligra 2.4.2 has replaced libre-office, amarok, kde-telepathy, spideroak , printer support, minitube, k3b to name a few.

-KDE 4.8.3

-Linux 3.4.3 (3.0.35 optional)

-Qt 4.8.2

-DVD image, including all locales and a nice selections of apps

-tomoyo-tools 2.5 added to a default install, for more security options

-wqy-microhei became the new default font for Chinese/Japanese/Korean

-QtWebkit 2.2.1

-Updated kmod, filesystem, zlib, udev, util-linux, mesa stack, and too many to list all here

-Move to /usr/lib to prepare for systemd switch

A good start is to read our Wiki or visit our Forums. To create reliable installation media, please follow the instructions in the wiki. Chakra's ISO's do not support unetbootin, and CD/DVD's need a burn speed no higher then 4x.
